Stop guessing which campaigns drive results. Add UTM tags to your links so Google Analytics tells you exactly where every visit and conversion came from — build a tracked URL in seconds.
Campaign details
Your tracked URL
- utm_source — where the traffic comes from (e.g. google, newsletter)
- utm_medium — the marketing channel (e.g. cpc, email, social)
- utm_campaign — the specific promotion or campaign
- utm_term / utm_content — optional keyword and A/B-test detail
What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are short tags you add to the end of a URL. When someone clicks a tagged link, Google Analytics (and most other analytics tools) records exactly which campaign, channel and source brought them in — so you can see what's actually working instead of everything lumping into "direct" or "referral".
Tips for clean campaign tracking
- Keep a consistent naming convention —
emailandEmailare counted separately. - Use lowercase and hyphens or underscores instead of spaces.
- Only tag external links (emails, ads, social). Never tag internal links between your own pages.
- Keep a shared spreadsheet of your UTMs so your whole team stays consistent.
Do UTM tags hurt my SEO?
Not when used correctly on external campaign links. Avoid adding UTMs to internal links, as that can fragment analytics and, in some cases, create duplicate URLs. Use canonical tags if UTM'd pages get indexed.
Which three parameters are essential?
utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. Term and content are optional and mainly useful for paid search and A/B testing.
