Hreflang Tag Generator
Serving different languages or countries? Hreflang tags tell Google which version of a page to show to which audience. Add your versions below and copy valid, ready-to-paste annotations.
Page versions
Use ISO codes: language only (en) or language-region (en-au, fr-ca). Region alone is not valid.
Generated hreflang tags
Place these in the <head> of every language version — and each version must list all the others, including itself (return links).
What is hreflang?
Hreflang is an HTML annotation that tells search engines a page has alternate versions for different languages or regions. It helps Google serve the right version to the right user — an Australian searcher sees your en-au page, a French searcher your fr page — and prevents these near-duplicate pages from competing with each other.
The rules that trip people up
- Return links are mandatory: if page A links to page B, page B must link back to A.
- Include a self-reference: each page should list its own hreflang too.
- Use valid codes: ISO 639-1 language, optionally with an ISO 3166-1 region.
- Use absolute URLs: always full
https://addresses.
Do I need hreflang if I only have one language?
No. Hreflang is only for sites with multiple language or regional versions of the same content. A single-language site doesn't need it.
What is x-default for?
It specifies the fallback page for users whose language or region you haven't explicitly targeted — often a language selector or your primary/global version.
